Carbon Fiber 101

2x2 Twill vs. Plain Weave Carbon Fiber

When shopping carbon fiber you'll see "2x2 twill" and "plain weave." Both are real carbon — the difference is the pattern and the look.

2x2 twill weave

Twill is the iconic diagonal checkerboard most people picture when they think carbon fiber. The 2x2 pattern drapes well over curves and has a deep, three-dimensional look under clear coat. It's the most popular finish for automotive parts.

Plain weave

Plain weave is a tighter, flatter over-under grid. It looks more uniform and technical, and some prefer it for a subtler, OEM-style appearance.

Does the weave affect strength?

For typical automotive panels, the visible weave is mostly cosmetic — layup, resin ratio, and thickness drive strength far more than 2x2 vs. plain. Choose based on the look you want.
